A typed transcription of the diary of Joseph Clark who embarked on a missionary trip to upstate New York in 1797 and met with members of the Oneida, Tuscarora, Niagara, Stockbridge, nations. Clark was born in London, England in 1745 and later moved to Philadelphia where he became a teacher. One of his pupils was Dolly Madison, wife of President James Madison. The author states that he faithfully reproduced the spelling and capitalization of the diary but changed punctuation on occasion for greater clarity. Clark descendants inlcude Hannah Townshend Longstreth of Warminster Township and her son Edward Longstreth. |
